A “cool– legislative bill

You've heard us say it over and over here at Progressive Wednesday, we want you to make change happen yourself, not wait for your elected officials to do it for you. We are not, however, promoting political mannequinism. We want you to get involved, to vote for and support the most progressive politicians, to support the most progressive ideas in government.

In that light, a few weeks ago Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) sponsored a bill along with ten other senators that will begin to set standards that will curb carbon emissions and take that vital first political step towards slowing and eventually reversing the effects of global warming. The bill has ten things that it aims to achieve and you can read about them here. Most importantly, this bill:

  • Calls for 30% reduction in greenhouse gases from cars by 20l6 and calls for energy facilities built after 2012 to be as clean as a new natural gas plant.
  • Contains an energy efficiency standard requiring reductions in electricity use through the use of consumer products that are low carbon such as efficient light bulbs.
  • Requires utilities to generate or purchase an increasing amount of renewable energy.
  • Contains a standard for low carbon renewable fuels such as cellulosic ethanol or other fuels that reduce carbons emission 75% or more.

No, the bill isn't perfect. It doesn't do enough. But it is an important first step in combating this apocalyptic problem. So we ask you to join over 57,000 other Americans and become a “citizen co-sponsor– of this progressive piece of legislation, regardless of your political party. But don't wait for this to become a law to take action yourself. There are many ways that each of us can do our part to make this world livable for our children and grandchildren. Read more about it here and here. So sign the petition, then turn off those lights in the other room.
