The lesser known health care industry

Hopefully you pet owners were inspired yesterday to write that 300 word essay to thankyourvet.org nominating your veterinarian for “Vet of the Year.–   Again, if you want help writing, drop us an e-line.

My own “Vet of the Year– (my wife) came home from the clinic last night clearly upset. She loves her job, the hospital she works at, and the people she works with and for.  No, instead she was frustrated with the emotional roller coaster of dealing with clients and their animals.  This happens frequently as she goes from a client who would sooner put his/her dog down than spend a few hundred dollars to fix the problem to a client who would do and pay anything to save an incurable pet. Fortunately, most fall somewhere in between, willing to do everything they can within their means.  Unfortunately, most don't have pet insurance.

Not to sound too Guthy-Renker, but for just a few bucks a month you can insure your pet against many injuries and illnesses that might otherwise be too expensive to treat.  These insurance policies are growing in popularity.  According to Trends Magazine, 2% of the pet population in the United States is insured, up from .5% in 2002, with 73% of veterinarians agreeing that it leads to better health care.

But pet insurance offers more than just the ability to pay for treatment injuries and illnesses. In the veterinary industry it's called “compliance,– getting the clients to do what is necessary to prevent these occurrences in the first place. A pet owner will be much more likely to have their animal's teeth cleaned for a few bucks now rather than having a much more expensive extraction in the future if some or all of the cleaning is covered.

It may be the least expensive way for you to care for Fluffy and will likely improve the quality of care he receives. You can learn more about the pros and cons of pet insurance here and you can get free quotes from several different companies here. But if nothing else, at least ask the vet about it next time Rover has that muzzle on.

Thanks to this animal lover for the pic
