New research shows that a little midday snooze seems to reduce the risk of fatal heart problems, especially among men.
In several Mediterranean and Latin American countries employees are allowed to take afternoon naps, or “siestas– . Whereas napping is often considered “lazy– in our culture, it has shown to have great benefits in those countries where it is commonplace.
In the largest study to date on the health effects of napping, researchers tracked 23,681 healthy Greek adults for an average of about six years. Those who napped for about half an hour at least three times weekly had a 37 percent lower risk of dying from heart attacks or other heart problems than those who did not nap.
But wait, there's more. Not only are there great health benefits, but employers see greater production out of their “nappers– as well. And it's beginning to seep into this country as well. Most famously, Yarde Metals in Southington, Connecticut built a “nap room– in order to promote employee mental and physical health. According to Cornell University professor James Maas,
Someone losing as little as one hour of sleep per night for a week, can experience a productivity drop of 25 percent.
